The main concept behind High Dynamic Range imaging is that you are taking several normal photos and combining them. By combining photos of the same scene at different exposure levels, you create a a surreal image with hyper-real colours and detail. The technique actually has real-world applications when taking indoor shots, when you want a level of detail that a single exposure will not allow.
